Mount Savage/C9.4

On September 1, 1953 the C&P was merged into the WM. The WM began to rid itself of duplicate lines as the Eckhart Branch was abandoned as well as 5 1/2 miles of the mainline. The track was pulled from Mt. Savage Jct. to Mt. Savage, which later became Rt. 36. The remain track was left to serve the brick works at Zihlman and Mt. Savage. tHis track was accessed from Switch No.9 on the Wm Connellsville Sub. The branch left the WM here and ran under the WM main to negotiate a switchback wtih only a 3-4 car capacity. This switchback was left from the original C&P mainline which had run up the valley from Cumberland, zig-zagged up the mountain thru two switchbacks then tunneled under Frostburg to Westernport.

A former C&P shop buildings along the C&P mainline as it comes into Mt. Savage in 1968. I took a similar photo in 2013. (1968, Don Biggs photo)

A C&O and WM covered hopper are still being used in a former C&P RR shop building as a silo. This other smaller building was also a C&P shop. (March 9, 2013)

C&P Rail Road building still standing next to the former shop buildings in Mt. Savage on March 9, 2013.

Combined three photos that Don Biggs took in 1968 looking railroad east next to the C&P building in the previous photo. You can see the brick works buildings to the left where a Canadian Nationl box car is being loaded. A C&P building stands in the center of this grouped photo followed by the C&P main on the right. (All 3 photos by Don Biggs, 1968)

A coal company building still stands near the C&P shop buildings. The second shot is looking west across what was once a railcar loading dock towards a C&P building and the Union Coal Company building. (March 9, 2013 photos)

This early photo shows a C&P train at the brick works.

Track leading up into a loading dock at the brick works in 1968. On March 9, 2013 a building and part of the loading dock with rails still down remain. Looks as if the rest was simply covered over, so it may still be all intact. (1968 photo, Don Biggs)

A track leads over the creek towards another loading dock and group of building in 1968. *gain in March 9, 2013 some of the loading dock and buildings still remain. However the tracks and bridge have been removed. (1968 photo, Don Biggs)

A C&P train has is stopped at the Mt. Savage Station in 1920, later in 1955, the WM is in control of the C&P and all of the stations excluding Frostburg were being dismantled as the Mt. Savage Station is seen here.

WM Russian Decapod 2-10-0 No. 1106 is sitting in the C&P Yard at Mt. Savage.

C&P's Mount Savage Yard looking east in 1968. This was also the former location of the station pictured above. I climbed up a gravel pile in the former yard and took a photo looking west in 2013. (1968, Don Biggs photo)(J. Cooper 3-9-13)

A former wooden C&P boxcar is being used as a garage and shed along the road in Mt. Savage in 1968. The boxcar today is long gone. Also in 1968 a wooden B&O caboose was also on display in Mt. Savage. (Don Biggs photos)

Looking east towards Cumberland from the east end of the yard at Mt. Savage. The end of track is in the distance. From there to Mt. Savage Jct. near Corringanville, most of the former C&P mainline had been built as an improved road for Rt. 36. I took a photo also looking east from the former yard on March 9, 2013.

Looking east from the abandoned C&P Mainline at the east side of Mt. Savage. This would have been the Iron Rail Street crossing of the C&P RR. (March 9, 2013)
